Fling High Altitude balloons is fun over the past 2 years I saw quite a lot of Balloon’s fly and I was involved in the past 2 flights of Secunda Radio Armature club with their Balloon’s, We are currently involving schools to fly since projects with us on the next mission on 6 October. I have developed a Microcontroller for schools to do data logging and it can also be used as a flight computer for a High altitude balloon. There will soon be more information on the Project on HABspace.net

The School project will take the leaners thru a Basic electronics course then we will learn them to solder and build there one microcontroller and data logger with a programming course for the controller. The final reword is to fly the project with the club in October.

Celebrate the TENTH anniversary of SOTA in South Africa

It is for me an privilege to undertake a SOTA in my home town. As a teenager I always wanted to do this in the Magalisberg and now is the opportunity to do it nearly 32 years later. Any one in the Rustenburg aria that wants to join me is welcome to contact me or send me an e-male at ZS6WBT@telkomsa.net with your phone number. To get to the SOTA point on the Magalies  is about a 3 to 4 Km hike up the mountain climbing from 1280m to 1645m above see level. The plan is to gather at Bergheim Holiday Resort at 7:00am on 22 September 2013  Come prepared with good hiking shoos; a hat and a water bottle don’t forget the suntan lotion and energy bars.

SOTA 21/3/2013

My seconds SOTA with the Secunda Radio Club was a very present day out on 2 of the Mpumalanga pikes about 40km from Standartom We first went to “Koppiealeen” and then to “Perdekop” the pikes is about 5 to 10Km apart Thanks to Christo and Koekies for the organization and planning of the day, and thanks to  Hoffiea and  Gert for there equipment that when along it was not to heavy to catty. The day was a success and all fore of us hat 4 contacts. For the chasers of the day thanks for the contacts it was very interesting talking to you.

SARL Hamnet 40m Sinulated Emergansy Contest 3/3/2013

The day out at Thtichardtsfonteinontspanningsoorddam was very nice with the children helping me to set up the antenna and equipment. Hardus did the braai for us and Bianca and Tiffany prepared the rest of the food . At the beginning I had bad power connections and modulation trouble but it was sorted out and I end’s 3rd in Category B with 480 points. Congratulations to ZS2U with 1098 points in 2nd place and the winner ZR6LJK with 1559 points The first and third place belongs to Secunda radio club this year.

Secunda Radio Club participate in the veiled day competition 9 Feb 2013

The club gathered at Badplaas camping site to take part in the SARL veiled day competition. When it was time to set up antennas open space for 2 dipole antennas was a bit of a problem an one of the antennas had to be hang in a tree. Amazing to find out that this was the most used antenna with the best results.

It was a very relaxing weekend and I have again learned a lot from the rest of the club members We had 47 QSO’s of witch 3 was DX QSO’s  all with 50W  We will probably not be No. 1 in the competition but the social and  togetherness of the team was a nice team building weekend and that make us No. 1.

The VK2RNC-R Repeater in Newcastle Australia

During my visit to Australia in May 2012 I went to Mount Sugarloaf the highest point near Newcastle somewhere on these toe huge towers is the antenna for the VK2RNC-R Echo Link repeater that I connect to from time to time. If you know where the antenna is please comment and tell us more?

DX - EXPEDITION

The Secunda Radio Club is hosting a DX-Expedition in Swaziland and will be active from 6/4/2012 to 10/4/2012 (24/7) see if you can make contact withe them 3AD0FC . SARL Hamnet 40 m Simulated Emergency Contest

My first attempt to participate alone in a Contest went of OK to me I have worked 4 devotions and 17 contacts with a total of 184 points. We will see where it will place me when the results come. I have setup a field station at Thrichardsfonteindam it took me 20 to 30min before I was ready to use the equipment. I hope that the lessons that i have learned will make me faster. In the process the Banana branch broke and I had to improvise by using a peas of my roller. Enjoy the photos

When nature take over your surge pips “it is not time for nature to call”

Back from holiday and I had to dig up my surge pipes because Nature have taken over the space in them. The bends and couplings was filed with roots from a nerdy tree the roots in the 4th picture was taken out of the trench that was dig and at last the trench was closed. Now can “Nature” call with out veer of an overflow.

Care Emergency exercise 30 Nov 2011 Secunda

On 30 Nov 2011 Care had an emergency exercise in Secunda where the group of HamNet members assist with emergency communication to all the emergency services in Secunda, Evander and Thrichartd. We have manned 7 points and it was a grate success only one station had problems. Thanks to Get ZS6GC we were peppered for the situation Well don Gert. If nothing go's wrong in a exercise you do not learn to be ready when trouble strikes and a lot of lessons was learned.

Sunspot

Photos of Sunspot 1339 inspired me to try to take a photos by an attempted to capture sum thing about this event. It was a bellyful evening out in the felt about 3km north from Secunda in the west the sunset and in the east the moon. Unfortunately my photos do not show the sunspot but this was what i got instead.

This is how my shack grow

You will see on my photos that my equipment got upgraded to the first shelf of my newly build radio rack. And the Crowe's nest of cables move to the flour. I have also got myself a 2m, 70cm handheld Radio. The Anofeng UV-3R radio is a 2W handheld toy that have gave me a range of about 80Km when I was testing it with the Rustenburg repeater. I think it is good enough for me to us for now. After all I’m only live about 800m from the Secunda repeater and I can use it on low power and still have good 2m communication.

I have also got DSL internet now and after about 2 hours on the phone with Telkom that is also now working. I have also learned about ECHOLink and that is also now working on my PC and I am looking forward to see the Secunda ECHOLink on line soon. More on that on the Secunda club site.

Progress on my first rig

I have got my first radio in the post a secondhand Yesu FT-707 and it seems to be in a very good condition. So on a low budget I have to get my station going. I still have a old deep-cycle Battery in the garage that I got for camping purposes and a car charger that must make the power supply. I also had a 6m length of lip channel from a previous construction job that will have to be the tower. I had to borrow a 12m peas of coax cable from a friend because no one in Secunda keep it in stock. I will replace it as soon as I get the opportunity to go to Gauteng. I bought a 100m earth wire that was just enough to build a milt band dipole antenna. ZS6GC helped me with his equipment to get the SWR cut for 40m so that I can get going we will get the rest of the friekwensie spectrum sorted out later. Thank you, Gert for your help and knolling shirring. I have tested the rig today and it seem if there is still a vie things that I need to sort out on the modulation but the imported part is it is a beginning and I hope to have my first QSO tomorrow. SOTA Ossewakop ZS/MP-004

My First Contact

On 16 Jun 2011 I was invited to join the Secunda Radio Club on a SOTA just 3 weeks after i have pass my Amateur exam. I dit not know what a SOTA was but i had to learn quick. Behind Wakkerstroom is a mouton with the name of Ossewakop we setup a station on the top of this mouton in extreme strong wind. The whether forecast was sunshine withe wind of 50Km/h I'm sure it was way above it and it was not practical to setup a mas withe a antenna so the best antenna for the day was Tom's long wire.

Just after the first contact I was coaled to make my first contact it was withe ZS6ACT how took of my Amateur exam what an honer to make the first contact withe him. On the end of the day I have made contact withe 7 people. The other Amateurs Chris ZR6LJK, Tom ZS6TMO and Gert ZS6GC each had 8 contacts. I had a grate time withe them and now have the bug bit me to get my own equipment ready to go on the ear.
